Oftentimes, a proud owner of a new Wii gaming system gets their console home, only to start worrying about their precious, and expensive, discs getting lost or damaged. They look into how to copy wii games, and find out that it’s possible. Next, they start questioning whether it’s legal.

The quick response is without a doubt “Absolutely!” It is completely lawful to back up Nintendo Wii games. Unfortunately the long response is a little more complex, and I shall address that imminently.

There’s been a lot of arguing in recent history, but the current answer is found in the Fair Use Act, which simply says that you legally can copy, rip, burn, backup, or whatever you would like to describe it, if the user are the purchaser of the master game.

Music, movies, and games on CD or DVD are all included in this decision. As a matter of fact, this author (and many others in the industry) would highly suggest that you rip and backup any game that you purchase as soon as you get it home. This way, you have a replica copy of the game in case anything ever happens to the original disc.

Additionally, the burned copy can be used regularly, while the master is stored away in a safe place. Bottom line: there is no lawful punishment for burning Wii games. The United States Government is not going to come knocking on on your back door, or fine you millions of dollars.

There is a problem to be aware of though. Game companies put DRM encryption on their game CDs to prevent you from exercising your lawful right to make backups. They do this so that you cannot make copies and give them away to friends. However, there is a way around this.

The companies can do nothing to completely prevent this from happening, but they can try to make it difficult. The protections themselves are completely legal, but removing them is also legitimate.

The way around it is to get a software package that does it automatically. Several enterprising software companies have put applications together that will help you to crack the encryption and copy games with just a few clicks of a mouse. (Be thankful, because it took them YEARS to figure out how to do this). If you’re interested, you can locate these software packages very easily with a quick Google search.
