Above Ground Pool Liners Can Extend Pool Life When Replaced Regularly

By Carlee Picotte

Swimming is almost universally enjoyed by human beings where there are locations with clean, safe water and warm air. Because most of us today live in urban or suburban areas, we bring the water to our own backyards in the form of sunken or raised swimming areas. These facilities require consistent maintenance to stay in the best condition, and the above ground pool liners need regular replacement.

Raised swimming areas are often installed wherever space or cost-effectiveness demands it. They may be a little smaller than many excavated in-ground installations, but require much of the same kinds of consistent care to remain in pristine condition. To prolong useful life an owner needs to replace the liner periodically to prevent degradation from weather, sun exposure and general use.

Liners serve as protection from debris, keep the water inside the walls, and maintain a consistent water temperature. An unseen benefit is strengthening and protecting the entire outer structure, which bears a great deal of water pressure when filled. With the passage of time, however, the liner can develop small breaks and cracks, and will begin to leak. A little knowledge of what is available before buying can make replacement easier and less expensive.

Product durability and quality has improved greatly in the past few years. In addition, there are also many different models and styles available for replacement, including the uni-bead, beaded, expandable and overlap types. Primarily made of 20 to 25 gauge vinyl, knowing which replacement looks best and is right for you is absolutely essential before buying.

Replacement requires the exact measurements, including the depths. After obtaining the correct measurements, choose a liner with a good record of customer satisfaction. Overall cost is not necessarily the best indication that the product will last the longest, and reading product reviews on the Internet may help to make the best choice.

Styles that overlap are designed to fit over the top and hang down the outside of the walls, and are made in a wide variety of patterns and sizes. Also popular are beaded models. These are designed to attach to a track, and they are held in place solidly by a welt or bead along the covers edge. They work well in backyards that include decking, and are relatively easy to replace.

The uni-bead liner can be designed to fit most raised models. It can be used in a similar fashion as the overlap and allowed to hang down, or it can be used like the beaded variety, and tailored to fit. Expandable varieties are basically very tall liners that are designed to accommodate the deepest levels, allowing for an extra two to three feet of depth.

Installing above ground pool liners can be a do-it-yourself job, but it may turn into a rather complicated project. Materials can be damaged during installation, and may end up leaking after all that work. The owner with little or no knowledge of liner replacement may wish to have the project done professionally in order to save money and effort in the long run. Quality materials and professional installation will allow you to enjoy swimming at home for many worry-free seasons.
