Adding paving stones to your outdoor space is a great way to improve both the look and feel of your garden, and the end result can look simply stunning. What’s more, garden paving stones are very easy to maintain, and they can encourage you to spend more time outdoors, enjoying the garden and entertaining guests.

However, not every garden paving project is as simple to complete as you may think. Take paving stairways, for example. For this tricky job, you may need some expert advice and guidance.

Anyone who has decided to attempt a garden paving job themselves, either at the front or back of their homes or to link different levels and areas of the garden together, will need to have a few key tools at their disposal. Paving stones should be the first thing on your list, followed by a level, shovel, hammer, gravel and sand, tape measure, broom and wood stakes.

The first thing to do is to work out the direction, width and height of your intended staircase. Mark out this area in some way, possibly using some spray paint or string. Measure the total rise difference from the top to the bottom of the stairs, and then the distance needed between each step, and make a note of this somewhere. From this, you will also be able to work out how many steps you need.

Check how deep and wide your paving slabs are, and use this information to mark out the width and depth of each step on the ground. Then, shape each step by removing the right amount of top soil from each intended step base.

Adding a layer of gravel is the next thing to do, followed by adding a layer of sand. Make sure you tamp and level these layers as you go, so that you can work each paving stone into the top sand layer and have everything be even. Last of all, pour some more sand on top of the paving stones and sweep into the gaps for a perfect finish.
