There are many styles of glass lamp shades used not only for illumination but also as an anchor piece for a particular style of home decor. What is an anchor piece? An anchor piece is a central decorative object around which other decor elements are added. Oftentimes this can be a set of furniture or perhaps a distinctive coffee table or even an antique shelf. Here we consider how beaded lamp shades carry sufficient decorative heft to serve as a central anchor piece.
Beaded lamp shades are a type of glass lamp shade (fabric ones are also available) that are distinguished by attachment of decorative beads. The beads may hang from chains, thread or wire from the lower rim of the shade. More commonly they are glued or cemented onto the surface. If the beads are made of glass too the light source will illuminate all the glass pieces causing them to refract and diffuse the light in new, interesting ways.
A particularly vexing problem of beaded lamp shades is the issue of constantly detaching beads. If one of the gets lost, the repair strategy might be drastic indeed. A whole new set of beads have to be found and made to replace the existing ones. A restorer would charge a lot for such major restorative work. It is sometimes more economical to head down to the crafts store and find your own beads for use in repairing beaded lamp shades.
One kind of shade that is rarely found with beads is the Tiffany lamp shade. The style of glass lamp shades that has come to be known as Tiffany shares its name with the luxury jewelry store that is famed all over the world. The designer, Louis Comfort Tiffany, lived in the early 1900s, forging novel art and contributing to the area of home decor.
Another shade rarely with beads are torchieres. Torchiere shades are the ubiquitous standing lamps found in homes. They are versatile as they can be moved to different locations as need be in the house. The tall lamp projects light upward, casting a soft glow on everything. There are a number of shade shapes for torchieres, but perhaps one of the most popular is the cone lamp shade.
Beaded glass lamp shades can be found in a number of shapes and sizes. The shapes have rich names, e.g. hurricane glass shades and gas lamp shades. The hurricane shade is characterized by an hour-glass shape that gets fat in the center and subsequently tapering up into a pinched-off top. Due to its distinctive outlines it is an extremely striking piece of lighting. One other fascinating lamp shade is the historical gas lamp shade that saw itself popularized in the age of Queen Victoria. The day and age watched over the coming-to-age of gas lighting and the subsequent growth in number of consumers and producers.
