Solar Lights – The Bright Energy Solution

By Steve Schafer

Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

When you think of solar lights, what image comes to mind? Most people will picture big, ugly solar panels with wires going to very plain, boring light fixtures that don’t match the home at all. Luckily, this is no longer the case with today’s modern solar lighting technology. The photovoltaic (solar) cells have shrunk in size and grown in efficiency; needing less and less light to produce more energy. The integration of Ni-cad rechargeable batteries into the design of the fixture allows for the storing of more of the energy gathered by the solar cells. The bulbs themselves have evolved from the older incandescent and CFL bulbs to LED bulbs that do a much better job of turning energy into light.

The recent advancements in solar technology have given manufacturers the freedom to design solar lights that vary more and more in design and application. Solar path lights now have the photovoltaic cells, lights and batteries built into one small fixture. Their compact nature makes it possible to simply push the fixture into the ground where ever you want it. For accenting different areas of your garden, solar accent lights are the way to go. They come in many gorgeous designs that will match any decor and are just as easy to install as path lights. If you are looking for security lights, solar security lights are your best bet. Mounting them is fast and easy, and most of them come with a motion sensor that will turn the light on when they sense movement.

There are many benefits to using solar lighting. One benefit is that most solar lights have no wires. Being wireless makes installing them a snap. Just find a place to put them where they will collect sunlight. If you need lights where there is no sun, there are some that come with a separate panel that you can place in an area that has more light. Even with these remote solar fixtures, there is only one wire and the panel is small.

Another benefit is that they are pretty much “set it and forget it”. Solar lights are completely maintenance free. The bulbs and batteries are intended to last the life of the product. In fact, if the bulbs ever burn out, you can pretty much afford to replace the entire fixture, as solar lights have become so inexpensive. Once you place your lights where you want them, you never have to worry about them again.

To me, the greatest benefit of all is that solar lighting is “green”. They use renewable energy (the sun). That makes them great for the environment and for your pocketbook. The earth is running out of non-renewable resources and the cost of electricity is constantly going up. Not only does switching to solar lighting allow you to help save the planet’s resources, but it saves you money as well. They cost nothing to run.

There are so many reasons to switch to solar lighting that I could not possibly cover them all in one article. Future developments in solar technology ensure that solar lights will continue to increase in efficiency and decrease in price. We get to save money AND help save the Earth! Sweet!
