By Shannon Swchartz

Tomato lovers enjoy the juicy taste of a great tomato. The texture and feel is also important. Many will not use the same type of tomato for their salad or sandwiches. They don’t require any additional products or techniques to prosper than regular tomato seeds. Many actually provide more fruit and have a longer growing season.

Heirloom seeds are older varieties which many communities used in the past. Most were grown prior to the agricultural revolution. Smaller farms used these seeds for their consumption. They did not have the benefits that many corporation use now to extend the life of food on grocery store shelves. They were also only needed in the areas that they were grown in. They were not shipped long distances to places over the world.

Why do heirloom seeds produce great tasting fruit? It is simply because they have not been tampered with. They have not been genetically modified to look great. Altered seeds are a fraction of the cost of heirlooms. These seeds are modified to look great and ensure long life on store shelves. When this happens it affects the taste.

If you want to save money by growing your own tomatoes from seeds then do not use those left over from items that you bought at the grocery store. They have a gene which prevents them from growing.
