Acne Vulgaris Originates From The Root Of The Hair

By Shawn Everette

Acne occurs mainly during puberty, when the sebaceous glands are stimulated by increased hormone levels, especially the androgens (such as testosterone), resulting in excessive sebum production. By a person’s early to mid-20s, hormone production stabilizes and acne usually disappears. Boils may be caused by ingrown hairs, clogged sweat glands, or foreign material that becomes imbedded in the skin. Treatment typically involves heat application, draining the boil, and antibiotics to eliminate bacterial infection. The back is made of tough skin with thousands of sebaceous glands that produce a lot of oil.

During these hormonal imbalances sebaceous glands release more sebum than usual. This excess of sebum combines with sweat, skin cells and dirt causing a good breeding environment for bacteria to form. Accutane kills oil glands under the skin, thereby removing the much needed producer of oil. Pores contain sebaceous (say: suh- bay -shus) glands (also called oil glands) that make sebum (say: see -bum), an oil that moistens your hair and skin.

These larger glands can produce more severe lesions such as nodules and cysts more frequently. The skin on the back is also much thicker than that on the face, sometimes making effective treatment more challenging. All of this sweat and dirt mixes with the oil that is secreted by your sebaceous glands (sweat glands), and this clogs up the pores on your skin on your back, and this results in back acne. It is smart to make sure you are always clean and take showers regularly, especially after physical activity that has made you sweat. Sebum is an oily substance produced by oil glands of skin. Over produced sebum clogs pores on skin and prevent the release of dead skin cells.

As far as the medical community stands, back acne also happens when oil glands start functioning more rapidly around puberty. The hormone group androgens, found in both females and males, get overactive which in turn causes a reaction in the oil glands, which make extra oil. It markedly reduces the size of the oil glands so that much less oil is produced. As a result, the growth of bacteria is decreased. When oil-producing sebaceous glands become over active, extra sebum or oil is produced. This excess oil then gets mixed with dead skin cells to block the skin pores and draw bacteria.

Cyst is a type of acne that occurs when the sebaceous glands produce more oil (sebum) than the body requires. This excess oil accumulates around the pores, lying just beneath the skin, clogging them over a period of time. Once again it’s due to the overproduction of sebum (oils) by the sebaceous glands that then clog up pores and cause acne on face, neck, back, hairline or wherever. These is because, thanks to the larger glands found on the back, more oil is produced on the back than it is on the face. The skin on the back is also much thicker than that which occurs on the face.

It is an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles. The lesions are usually found on the skin of the face, neck, chest and shoulders. Hormonal increases, particularly an increase in androgen, cause sebaceous glands to work overtime. This is common during puberty and during a female?s menstrual cycle. If bacteria settle in, then the sweat glands beneath the pores get infected which results in cystic acne. This is the type of acne I suffered from on my back, and occurs more frequently on the back due to the larger pores and thicker skin.
