Does it sound like people are whispering when you are talking to them? You may need a hearing aid to compensate for deterioration in your hearing. These electronic devices are available in different types and styles and can provide many benefits. They are easy to look after and very quickly you forget you are even wearing one.
These small devices are designed to pick up sounds and amplify them for a hearing impaired person. They have a microphone that collects sounds. An amplifier and receiver increase the volume of the sound, and a battery powers the device. The conventional type of aid increases the volume of all sound in the environment. Analog and digital models can be programmed to a specific user’s needs.
Some people are concerned about the visibility of the device. Completely-in-the canal and in-the-canal styles are almost impossible to see unless someone is looking directly into the wearer’s ear. Even in-the-ear models are barely noticeable unless attention is drawn to them. Behind-the-ear styles are unobtrusive and are easier to use for people who have also lost some dexterity.
As hearing loss is usually a gradual process. Many people don’t realize how far their hearing loss has gone. They adjust the way they operate in life by doing things like turning up the television. They often also talk louder because they can’t hear what other people are saying. This can be annoying for family, friends and neighbors. Using a device designed to enhance hearing can result in better relationships with family and friends.
Hearing loss is not a visible impairment. Unless people are told a person suffers from hearing loss they will not know. Constant requests to repeat what has been said are often interpreted as a lack of understanding. Hearing impaired people are sometimes treated as if they are less intelligent and this impacts their self-esteem.
Can you imagine how it would feel if a child was injured because you couldn’t hear their cries for help? Because hearing loss occurs over time it sometimes goes unnoticed. It is quite possible for a hearing impaired person to not realize their hearing has deteriorated to a point that is unsafe. Being able to hear what is happening to others who depend on you is important. And, it can be achieved by the use of these simple devices.
The sound of your voice or other familiar noises can be slightly different when wearing an aid. It takes a little time to get used to this. And just like the first time you wear glasses the physical sensation is noticeable at first too. But, just like wearing glasses it soon becomes familiar.
Moisture can be detrimental to electronic equipment and these devices are no different. They need to be kept dry and preferably stored in a solid case to protect them from accidental damage. They are not hard to look after. Cleaning them once a day and checking and replacing the batteries when necessary is all that is needed to keep them in good working order.
For a person who has a hearing impairment wearing a hearing aid can help to make life easier. Social interactions, self esteem and safety can all be improved considerably merely by using one small and unobtrusive mechanism.
