Childhood Illnesses: Recurrent Coughs
By Michal Jones
Many of us have experienced some form of illness that is common when we were still kids. There are pediatricians who would counsel parents to not be too anxious about these illnesses, considering that these help the kids strengthen their immune system. Parents must, nonetheless, continually pay attention to their kids’s condition, in order to see if the symptoms of the ailments have not progressed into something that would require medical aid.
Childhood cough is a common ailment in children, which is usually accompanied by colds. Air humidification, elimination of exposure to cigarette smoke and other compounds considered as irritants, and intake of suppressants and decongestants are some of the standard treatment methods for chronic coughing.
Nevertheless, chronic cough could also be the symptom of an underlying ailment that would require medical attention. Below are several ailments or disorders that can accompany chronic coughing.
Allergic Rhinitis
Usually, allergic rhinitis is set off by pollens or dust; hence, this disorder occurs seasonally. Coughing, clear runny nose, watery eyes, itching, and sneezing are the most common signs of allergic rhinitis.
Bronchitis
This is a viral ailment. Symptoms usually include coughing and runny nose. Over several days, the coughing gradually grows worse. Moreover, coughing can be accompanied by low grade fever; the sufferer may also complain of feeling weak. The child will show signs of becoming well again after eight to twelve days. This ailment does not react to antibiotic treatment.
Aspiration Or Ingestion Of Indigestible Objects
This is not an illness but immediate medical attention is needed when a child accidentally swallowed or inhaled a small object that then gets lodged in the windpipe, inducing him or her in a choking and coughing fit.
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that affects the entire body and causes progressive disability. Sadly, children are the usual sufferers of this disease. The sufferer of cystic fibrosis will have bouts of wheezing, persistent coughs and chronic lung and sinus infections.
When kids are having recurrent coughing bouts, parents should pay close attention. Some symptoms that coughing is more than just the usual childhood cough is when the coughing gets worse over several days, the kid is having difficulty breathing, and the cough does not go away when the standard cough treatments are administered. Parents should then seek medical help for their kids.
