Trying to to block a nagging voice may be fine from time to time. But if you are totally incapable of hearing it, you may be having a problem already. You may like to increase the volume of your TV or sound system just because you want surround experience, but if you are doing it because you are having difficulty hearing them when the volume is at an average level, then you may be suffering from permanent hearing loss.

Hearing loss is not unusual to those in the baby boomers stage, or simply those approaching the retirement age. Studies show that a large percent of this generation experiences a decrease in their hearing ability. There are ways to avoid it or even lessen it, but that depends on how committed one is in doing something about it.

Younger generations likewise experience signs that lead to hearing loss. It is either acquired during infancy or developed as they grow old. Teenagers lose their hearing in other ways. Some factors are self-inflicted, though unknowingly. Having unhealthy diet and poor hygiene, as well as listening to loud music are just some of it.

If you already can’t hear anything, you certainly know that you’ve lost it already. Permanent hearing loss isn’t obtained instantly, though. Unless one had it from an accident. You will get clues that you are nearing the loss of your hearing before it becomes absolute.

Symptoms you can expect include hearing muffled sounds. Maybe you have trouble hearing your mother scold you, which is impossible because she yells every word. If this is merely a one-time problem, maybe you are just having a cold, an ear infection, sinusitis, or other malady. But, if you experience this frequently, this may lead to complete hearing loss.

Some people have a habit of increasing the volume of their TV or speaker in a staggering level. If you think you turn up the volume not because you want it that way or because you had gotten used to it, then you may be doing it because you can’t hear it anymore if the volume is set on an average level. If that is the case, you already have damaged hearing.

Another sign is if you have difficulty distinguishing the main speaking voice from the backdrop sound. This is one of the most recognizable symptoms of hearing loss. You may be in trouble if you have difficulty picking out the voice of the person talking to you from the rest of the room’s sound.

The buzzing sound that you hear incessantly can also be a sign of your deteriorating auditory sense. You have tinnitus if you hear an irritating ringing sound that doesn’t go away. Many of those who have the symptom is at risk of losing their auditory sense eventually.

Don’t hesitate to go to an ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) specialist or an otolaryngologist if you are experiencing any of the mentioned symptoms. Don’t wait before the situation worsens. Your hearing may still be saved if a physician can treat it as soon as possible. An ENT physician would know what treatment is best to avoid or heal the problem. And even though not all treatable, hearing aids and other technology can save you from complete deafness.
