After snoring, perhaps the worst problem a married couple faces during sleeping time is if one of them suffers from sleep apnea. This is when someone stops breathing for seconds or even minutes during sleep then wakes up suddenly to catch his breath. The sufferer isn’t the only one who feels restless at night, his partner also gets disturbed in her sleep.

While you are not conscious of the condition because you are asleep when it happens, your partner is. You wake up with a start just long enough for your body to regain its normal breathing. But you have also awakened your wife, and her sleep isn’t approaching as soon as yours.

And that creates strain and tension in the morning… for the two of you.

Most people wrongly believe that sleep apnea is more bothering than dangerous. It is a serious life threatening issue, increasing the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and heart disease more than normal. So you are not just putting your and your wife’s sleep in danger, you are also putting your life at risk.

The best advice you can get is to consult a physician, one that specializes in Ear-Nose-Throat. Why? Because sleep apnea, just like snoring, has to do with the tongue and the throat. While snoring is a partial obstruction of the airway by your tongue, sleep apnea is the complete blockage. It momentarily stops the air from passing, preventing you from breathing normally.

Just like snoring, your weight counts. Although there are those who have sleep apnea have normal Body Mass Index, most sufferers from the condition are heavy. So aside from cutting down the usual bad-for-body suspects, such as drinking and smoking and stress, throw off some weight as well.

You might have also heard of CPAP machine to remedy your sleep apnea. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP, is a mask that one puts on during sleeping. Its machine creates a positive pressure of air on the airway, hence, preventing it from closing.

Do not wait for sleep apnea to cure on its own. It won’t. Confer With a doctor the minute you suppose you have it. Sleep Apnea does not only affect your sleep, it also affect your wife’s. Not to mention, you are exposing yourself to more dangerous health matters.

Consult a qualified ENT specialist for your hearing loss and allergy problems.
