Asthma can be difficult for adults. We can only imagine how even harder it is for children. Oftentimes, they do not understand how big of a deal their condition is; nor do they understand why their activities, food, and places they go to are being limited. This makes it even difficult for you and for your child to deal with asthma. But the difficulty does not mean that you cannot make it manageable.

Some of the methods that are being used for adults can also be effective for kids as well. But in order for it to be effective, your undivided attention, patience and vigilance are needed. Even at an early age you should make sure that your child understands the dangers and complications that come with the condition. Cite easy to understand examples in so that confusion can be avoided.

It is important that you understand your role as a parent since you will play a big part in your child’s asthma management. Depending on how old your child is, you can teach them to remember the details about his or her condition. One of the first steps is to have them remember the names of their medications and how they help their conditions. For instance, grab the inhaler if they feel tightness in the chest or breathing difficulties.

Knowing your child’s triggers and letting them know about it will also help them by learning which things they should avoid and which ones are safe. Also, as early as 4 or 5 years old, they should already be taught on which medications they can take depending on what they are feeling and when they should take it. Teach your child how to manage his/her asthma and how to communicate with others when they start to feel any of the symptoms.

Even after telling your child all he or she needs to know, you still have a part to play. You also need to know the triggers of your child’s asthma. It can very well be your doing; for instance, you’re a smoker. Another thing that you should do is to know how to use the peak flow meter so you can tell if there’s any airway constriction.

Asthma is a difficult condition to put up with. It can traumatize children at young ages. Help your child understand that when he or she knows how to deal with asthma, it is actually very manageable.
