Chiropractors can treat a variety of symptoms including general pain and discomfort or more specific problems like lower back pain or headaches. A trip to the chiropractor can treat these symptoms, but can also help avoid an invasive surgery or even reverse the effects of a long term issue. With the right chiropractor and a few aggressive treatments, the benefits can be life changing.
In western medicine, doctors make the most money when they provide quick diagnosis and send you off to a specialist or prescribe an approved round of medication. This model helps the vast majority of people most of the time. However, when it comes to back pain this model leads to the overuse of addicting pain killers and unnecessary invasive surgeries, neither of which fully treat the cause of the problem in many cases. Chiropractic care is a safe reliable alternative that costs less, does not involve medication, and doesn’t require surgery.
In this model the chiropractor starts by assessing the current position of your spine. They do so by monitoring the way your body is positioned when sitting, standing, and/or laying down. They will then push on different areas of your back and ask about the pain from the pressure. Finally they may request a series of Xrays on the back to see how it is aligned on the inside. With this information and your story about pain and discomfort they will be ready to begin a course of therapy.
Depending on the diagnosis and the chiropractor’s experience, they may apply a number of techniques. The most common are the Diversified Technique, the Activator Method, and the Gonstead technique. Each of these techniques is focused on realigning the back using different types of pressure to treat different areas. It may involve the chiropractor touching your back, using a hand held pressure device, or even adjustable tables to create the desired pressure.
One the chiropractor has diagnosed a likely cause of the symptom they will use any one of a number of spinal manipulation therapy techniques. These techniques typically included one or more of the following: Diversified Technique, Activator Method, or Gonstead Technique. These different approaches use adjustable tables, hand held adjustment devices, or the chiropractors hands to realign the spine or disk tissue between the vertebras.
Chiropractic care is effective for a number of symptoms. Most commonly people will see a chiropractor for low back pain. This type of pain is most often attributed to some dislocation or misalignment of the lower back. It can be easily treated by a chiropractor over the course of several adjustments.
The same is true for neck pain or whiplash. Often the pain felt is caused by pinching of the nerve ending between the sensitive disk space between upper vertebrae. Slight adjustments in this area can have a rapid and powerful effect on your pain levels.
Less commonly is the use of chiropractic care to treat headaches. This approach has been proven to work well with tension headaches, but can also work on some patients when they experience migraine or other forms of headaches as well.
Chiropractors work through the application of time tested techniques and a keen eye for the cause of an individual’s pain. They may not be the cure for everyone, but their approach is surely worth trying before getting a lifetime subscription for pain killers or risking your safety on an operating table.
