Benefits Of Massage Aromatherapy

By Micheal Webb

People in the early centuries use plants and their parts such as flowers, barks, roots, leaves and seeds to heal, energize, and help the body to relax. They were already practicing the ancient science of aromatherapy which is now considered as one of the most famous branch of herbal and alternative medicine.

What is aromatherapy massage?

Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils to alleviate pain and help the mind and body relax. A massage therapist usually uses a mixture of oils to calm the nerves such as lavender and bergamot and peppermint and eucalyptus to ease sore muscles and joints. Unlike fragrance and perfume oils that are mostly derived from chemicals, these essential oils are highly volatile and are extracted from plants and their flowers, leaves and barks. They are also used in aromatherapy baths, body treatments and facials.

Oils extracted from different plants have different healing characteristics. In general, they can affect your blood pressure, stress level, memory, breathing, digestion, sleep, as well as your immune system. Certain types of essential oils help you feel relaxed such as chamomile, lavender and geranium. If you want to uplift your mood and be energized, massage aromatherapy with ylang ylang, rose, clary sage and neroli would be beneficial. Another essential oil that is popular for its energizing and calming effects is the rosemary. If you seek relief from colds and flu, eucalyptus, tea tree and pine is a good choice as they are effective decongestants.

The Many Benefits of aromatherapy massage

Aromatherapy massage is an ideal for treatment of stress, for alleviating the mood and for achieving a sense of peace and tranquility within one’s self. It is also suited for people with insomnia, mild headaches to migraines, upper and lower back pains, PMS or premenstrual period and digestive disorders. The massage consists of slow, rhythmic and gentle strokes that help in increasing the nourishment and amount of oxygen absorbed by the aching muscles to relieve the pain. Aromatherapy massage also stimulates part of the brain that helps the body in naturally releasing hormones to help it feel relaxed, energized and release stress. It also helps reduce mental, physical and emotional stress, reduce muscle spasms, improve flexibility in the joints, reduce levels of anxiety and blood pressure and strengthen the immune system. It provides relief for muscle tension and stiffness and also stimulates blood circulation and stimulates the brain to produce the feel-good hormones called endorphins.

Stuff To Consider

If you have just gone through a surgery or is going through chemotherapy or radiation, you should avoid any forms of massage unless advised by your physician. This is also true for pregnant women especially in the first trimester. If you are pregnant and are allowed to get a massage, make sure that your therapist is certified in prenatal massage.
