Some people might say that it should not matter what an employee does while they are not working. This is true in many cases when an employee is on his or her own time, but when a worker drinks alcohol immediately before going to work, it can be a reason for great concern. Employee productivity can be affected, but people also end up being injured because of carelessness. Even the employee who is drunk can get hurt. When all is said and done there is a lot at stake when an employee drinks during work hours or before they start working.

Because of this, many companies are out there making sure that they are creating and improving ways that will allow employers to make sure that their business and their employees are safe. Breathalyzers used to be something only the police had. Now they are available to be purchased by anyone and everyone. They are very easy to use and give instant results.

Breathalyzers are available in your choice of several standard sizes. They even have models that are the size of a key chain. But whichever size someone buys, there should not be any question about trusting the breathalyzer’s test results. Every model should carry a government agency logo. If you are considering a model that has not been approved by a government agency, it would be best to save your money and purchase a different model.

Employers do want to be careful when selecting a breathalyzer. There are models that only read up to .08. If employers want to make sure that they are going to have an exact and accurate reading, in case the blood alcohol reading is higher than that, they will want to make sure that they are getting the model that will be able to do that for them.

Breath testers also need to be calibrated from time to time. The more frequently a breathalyzer is used, the more frequently it will require calibration. Doing this is essential because if you don’t, you may very well find out that the results you receive are inaccurate. This is the very last thing you need when you are dealing with the future of one of your workers.

There are some models that will allow you to replace a portion of the unit and it will automatically be recalibrated. Then there are the units that require you to send the entire thing to a factory for the recalibration. If you get the model that you can calibrate yourself, you will save yourself a lot of time and money.

When employers have suitable breath testers on hand, they are able to subject their workers to random breath tests whenever they think a test is appropriate. This will make sure that the company’s future, as well as the safety of its workers, will be secure.
