Control On Sugar Consumption Decreases Cavity Formation

The poor state of the country’s dental health can be seen in the popular TV commercial of the child who goes to her dad to show him that she has a cavity. When he reaches 21, the child will have had cavities in most of his teeth.

Dental caries or cavities are our most common disease. It is the result of the interaction of many causes such as inherited susceptibility, inadequate fluoride in the water, excessive sugar in the diet, poor nutrition, and poor dental hygiene. It’s possible that families may have bad teeth even though there could be no explanation as to why this is so. On the other hand, just because your grandfather had good teeth is no reason to neglect all the rules of good dental health. He may have lived in an area where the water supply was naturally high in fluoride. He may not have eaten sweets between meals. He most likely brushed his teeth with tooth powder and rinsed with brine.

Your options are plenty even if you can’t do anything about your heredity. You can push the local government to fluoridate the drinking water. According to studies, children who drink fluoridated water will only have half as much cavities as those who don’t. Fluoridating water will benefit older people because it keeps the calcium of bones intact, preventing the onset of osteoporosis.

You and your children should also cut down on sugar, particularly sugar loaded foods between or just after meals. Sugar in sticky forms should be avoided as much as possible. Dental caries start with plaques of protein and carbohydrate material that sticks to the surface of the teeth and in crevices between them. The plaque harbors bacteria that produce acid and that’s what corrodes the teeth. The bacteria love to feed on dextran, a substance made from table sugar.

Studies in several countries have shown that if sugar is eaten during a meal, caries is not as much a problem as when it is consumed between meals, especially in sticky forms. British mothers have been known to let babies suck from pacifiers containing syrup. Apparently, there is still one medical curiosity that might make you think twice.

Families sometimes acquire a disease known as hereditary fructose intolerance. These people become violently sick when they eat fructose that is, fruit sugar or sucrose table sugar even though they can eat starchy foods which contain glucose only. Early in life, such victims learn to avoid sucrose or any food containing it. Because of this, they only have a few cavities even if they consume food containing lots of carbohydrates.

Eating sugar is clearly the reason for the presence of cavities. Keep in mind that your gums and teeth are essential to your nutritional condition of your body. Dental health and tooth formation will benefit from vitamin and mineral intakes. Gum stimulation is a positive result of eating hard food.

This all shows just why it is so essential to brush our teeth and go to the dentist regularly. Pain, large expenses, and missing teeth could be what you are in for in the future.
