Could You Have A Drug Addiction?

By Erin Holladay

Drug addiction has plagued millions of individuals and families around the world. Its difficult for some to understand how people choose to continuously use drugs even after facing extreme negative side effects. Because the disorder is so extremely complex and often multi-faceted, it is difficult to stop and treat.

The reason why victims have an uncontrollable urge to abuse drugs is because their brains have been affected by repeated drug use. This changes the way the brain operates and affects a persons ability to think clearly and control his behavior. Altered brain function is also the reason why addicts have powerful drug cravings that can be difficult to ignore.

Even those various drugs have a wide variety of impacts; there are similar signs of addiction and abuse that you can look for. Regardless of the type of drug, there are typically symptoms to be aware of. It is important to seek help for you or a loved one, even though the addict themselves may be unaware of how large their addiction has become. Get help before its too late if you or someone you love has any of the following symptoms:

If you frequently neglect responsibilities at home, school or work, you may have a problem. If you continuously neglect work, flunk classes and find yourself distanced from friends and family, you should explore your drug treatment options. If you use drugs while operating heavy machinery or are careless by ways of having unprotected sex when under the influence, you should look into your options. Also if you get yourself into legal trouble because of conduct related to your drug habit, including stealing to support it, you have a problem that needs professional help.

If drugs are impacting your relationships with family and friends or you find yourself constantly fighting, you should reach out for help. Likewise, if you find yourself trying to stop taking the drugs and get unbearable withdrawal symptoms, professional help may be required. These symptoms can include insomnia, nausea, restlessness, depression and sweating spells.
