Acne during pregnancy affects about 85% of this population and can have long lasting and socially/psychological crippling effects on sufferers. Studies conducted showed that many people experience the break out of acne lesions at the onset of their adolescence and during pregnancy. While 60% of those who develop acne in adolescence may see the lesions disappearing over time permanently during their teenage years, 40% reported to experience a continuous or recurrance of acne at varying frequency and severity into adulthood. Common name by which acne is known in various demographic locations range from pimples, spots, blemishes, zits, blackheads, to just acne. Commonly affected areas of the body but not limited to facial and upper neck areas, back, shoulder, and chest.
Why is there a high prevalence of acne during pregnancy and adolescence? What commonly causes acne in the first place is the blockage of follicles. During pregnancy and adolescence there is raised hormonal changes due to puberty and menstrual cycle developments and or changes, the follicle produces excess sebum which in turn clogs or blocks the follicles which in turn causes acne.

Beacuse of the increased hormonal production the follicle glands tend to enlarge resulting in more sebum being produced which in turn clogs the follicles. Pregnancy is also a time when an increased hormonal changes occur which in turn will cause acne in the same manner as mentioned. In some people acne first develops during teenage years but many women have acne during pregnancy?
People are affected by acne during pregnancy in various forms and degree. Since acne causes the sufferer’s skin to be scared it can have psychological impacts. Aside scarring, acne can have adverse psychological impacts such as low self-esteem due to body image disturbance. As has been discussed acne is likely to develop in adolescence and in women women during pregnancy and puberty. This is the time when these population needs bonding. A time when many sufferers are like to deeply preoccupied with their body image resulting from developmental changes and the high anticipation to fit in and be acceptable in society. One study reported other seconadry effects which included, social exclusion, bullying by peer, depression, and suicide to result form .
In a study conducted some people reported experiencing low self-esteem and lack of confidence in social setting due to the body image disturbance caused by acne. More so acne during pregnancy and in adolescence comes at a time when there is great desired to fit in or to feel good and acceptable. A time when sufferers tend to be already socially precarious. there have been reported other secondary effects self-esteem reported in the study included, social exclusion, peer bullying, depression, and even suicide.
