Discovering Oral Allergy Treatment:

By Jerry Knight

Oral Allergy Treatment: Many Americans suffer from allergies (recent estimates are around 1 in 5). The number of children presenting with food allergies at an early age are increasing. The number of children that are carrying their “allergies” through to adulthood are also increasing. And the number of people that are suffering from seasonal and airborne allergies are also increasing.

It’s obvious that while allergies have been a problem for a long time…they are definitely a problem that is escalating. An allergy is a negative medical condition or episode that was triggered by an allergen. Allergens are otherwise harmless substances that trigger allergic reactions in a select group of individuals. Some allergic patients have mild reactions or symptoms, but some have severe reactions/symptoms. Sometimes symptoms or allergic episodes can even be life threatening for the patient.

There are many options available for patients suffering from allergies. The most basic treatment is avoidance of the allergen. Avoiding the allergen (in situations where that is possible) avoids the allergic reaction entirely. But there are many cases in which avoidance isn’t a viable option. Some cases can see improvement after the use of over the counter medications. They can reduce the severity of symptoms and/or the frequency of allergic episodes for some patients.

Some pharmaceuticals can alleviate symptoms for a number of allergic patients. Some treatments are beneficial as a short term treatment. Others are more beneficial for the long term. And some treatments don’t seem to benefit a patient at all. Making these differentiations can be difficult for a patient on their own. And some patients find themselves suffering from allergic conditions that are actually leaving them in danger during severe episodes.

Allergy shots can sometimes provide relief. They were have become one of the more traditional treatments for those suffering from allergies of many types. Allergists can provide guidance and knowledge regarding potential benefits of a variety of treatments due to their extensive knowledge of all medical issues relating to both asthma and allergies. They are also able to perform exact diagnostic procedures that can pinpoint allergens for allergy sufferers. Oral allergy treatment is often a wise choice of treatment; even for those who have tried many treatments with little to no results.

Treatment: The oral allergy treatment is often referred to as allergy drops. They are placed under the tongue of the patient experiencing allergies. Sometimes referred to as sublingual allergy serum, the allergy drops are based on immunological theories of treatment. Gradually increasing doses of allergen extracts allow the body to build up a strength against (or sometimes an immunity to) the allergen causing allergic reactions.

Summary: Oral allergy treatment can provide fast relief for allergy sufferers. Benefits are sometimes seen within months of the start of treatment. Patients can see a reduction in the severity of their allergic reactions, a decrease in episodes or an decrease in the number of symptoms presenting during episodes. Some even experience an elimination of the allergic reaction to the allergen targeted by treatment.

Food allergies, airborne allergies, seasonal allergies…all have been known to benefit from the use of oral allergy treatments. Many allergy sufferers have tried numerous treatments to no avail. But while oral allergy treatment isn’t the answer for every allergy patient; it is the answer for many.

Allergists have years of specialized training that makes them more apt to identify appropriate treatment methods. They are better able to identify allergens for patients due to the diagnostic testing they have at their disposal. Allergy sufferers can feel comfortable going to their allergist with detailed questions regarding their condition, their triggers, their allergens, their treatment history and more.
