A healthy amount of stress in our life can propel us to greater heights and achievements, however, what level of stress is enough in your life before it kills you? The truth is stress can bring about more negative effects in our health than positive one, not only it will affect us mentally, it can also affect our health negatively! Thus this article will talk about why it is important to handle them effectively before they eventually kill you.
Besides affecting your mental health, here are some other ways that excessive stress can kill you:
Firstly, we experience the fight or flight mode, a change in the state and physio of our body that includes several different hormones and chemicals being released into our body such as adrenaline and endorphins. Heart rate will go up together with your blood pressure and blood flow can slow down for several parts of our organs. This mechanism is in place to gives us the sudden burst of energy for survival, one that is necessary back in the past.
After the threat is over, your body will then start on the next stage where it will repair tissues that was damaged during the fight or flight mode, and this is called the stress resistance. Normal function of our body will begin again, but we are still somewhat on an alert mode.
The final physiological change in our body is the stress exhaustion stage; at this stage it can be potentially harmful, especially if we go through this stage often. Our cardiovascular system will suffer due to the overabundance of various chemicals produced during the first stage and as such will cause our immune system to be suppressed.
This is also why stress is often linked to cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease, stroke or high blood pressure. The changes stress brings to our body can often leads to formation of stomach ulcers, falling sick regularly due to a weakened immune system, as well as a change in our eating habits.
Other significant way that stress is affecting our body is that we will be constantly having headaches, body aches and also a drop in sexual desire and performance. Your sleeping pattern will also be somewhat altered due to stress.
Another extremely dangerous way stress can affect us in terms of health is that it escalates any pre existing condition especially conditions that involves the nervous system. Bowel disorders, digestive problems and chronic are all common when going through a stressful period.
