Most people get enough vitamin C through their diet. Your body needs vitamin C for growth, and to repair tissue damage. If you do not take in enough vitamin C, your teeth and bones will begin to weaken very quickly. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, so once your body has stored as much as it can any excess is excreted via your urine.

The symptoms of vitamin C deficiency include inflamed and bleeding gums, dry, splitting hair a dry scalp bruising easily and swollen and painful joints. In its more advanced stages people become anaemic, their wounds do not heal and a severely undermined immune system. At its worse vitamin C, deficiency leads to scurvy and death.

Taking a vitamin C supplement can help with the treatment of certain types of anaemia, bronchitis, capillary fragility, colds, elevated cholesterol, gingivitis, glaucoma, asthma, atherosclerosis, autism, cold sores, dysmenorrhoea, gastritis, gingivitis, gout and many other diseases.

Vitamin C can significantly improve an athlete’s performance, and has been shown to help with certain types of male and female infertility. Taken during pregnancy under the advice of a doctor it can also reduce the risk of certain types of miscarriages.

Some recent studies are showing that vitamin C is also important for good mental health. Having the right level of vitamin C in the body can help to protect against dementia and has been shown to help people with schizophrenia too.

You can find high levels of vitamin C in red peppers, currants, parsley, potatoes, Brussel sprouts, all citrus fruits, rose hips and strawberries. It is also added as a supplement in many foods, especially drinks and foods made for children.
Taking too much vitamin C depletes the body of copper. If you plan to take high levels of vitamin C over a prolonged period, you should consult your doctor to make sure that it will not interfere with any medications that you are taking. This is particularly important if you are taking iron supplements or have high levels of iron already in your body. If you take too much vitamin C, it can lead to stomach problems and diarrhoea.
