Carpal tunnel syndrome affects approximately one percent of people at some point in their lives. All age groups appear to be at risk, however, women between 30 and 60 years of age are the most common demographic. Repetitive wrist movements cause carpal tunnel syndrome as they put strain on the wrist and nerves in the person’s carpal tunnel. The most common symptoms are intense pain, tingling in the fingers, a weakened grip or a burning sensation or pain in the hand or wrist.
At the beginning stages of carpal tunnel syndrome, most people will experience soreness in the hand or wrist, as this is usually the first recognizable symptom. Participating in common every day activities such as typing on a computer or handwriting can cause carpal tunnel if these activities are done in excess. If overused, one will experience an outburst of pain in the wrist and hand. Most people also bend their wrists while they are sleeping. This will result in wrist and hand pain throughout the night as well as early in the morning upon waking up.
While some carpal tunnel syndrome sufferers may be able to get away with flexing the wrist to ease the pain, this is usually only helpful during the initial stages. As the severity of the disease increased, special and complex exercises become necessary. During the beginning stages of carpal tunnel syndrome, doctors often prescribe complete rest of the wrist and hand for a period of two weeks as an initial treatment. Failure to refrain from any activity that activates the wrist and hand may worsen the symptoms; therefore abstinence is important as it allows the sufferer to feel relief as they maintain the wrist in a rested position. Keeping the wrist still prevents any further injury or pain.
To relieve the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome, exercises are the most common treatment. In order to be fully effective, these exercises must be carried out at regular intervals, despite whether the symptoms are active or not. At its more severe stages, carpal tunnel syndrome may not be relieved through simple exercises and more comprehensive solutions may be needed. Anti-inflammatory pills and ice packs can be effective treatments in relieving the pain, however, they only offer a temporary solution and will not cure the disease. If the pain persists despite the use of exercises, anti-inflammatory pills or ice packs, it is important to seek medical attention and advice from a doctor.
Surgery may become a necessary treatment if the problem persists despite having completed the self-help treatments. If surgery is required, it is only a minor procedure that usually takes just a few hours. However, surgery is a rare treatment option as many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome can be taken care of through regular exercises and refraining from excessive wrist and hand use.
