Ab Workouts that Work

Whether you jog, join a gym or buy an exercise machine, ab workouts are something most people who are interested in fitness think about. For lots of people, the way their abs look is considered evidence of the kind of shape that they are in. The simple truth involves more than that but there is certainly nothing wrong with wanting your abs to be strong and toned. This article will go over some of the more effective ab workouts that you can add to your exercise routine.

Reverse crunches are one of the very best exercises that you can do, especially for your lower abdominal muscles. You’re already familiar with regular crunches and how good they can be but when you do them by themselves they won’t give you the toned look you’re working for. Reverse crunches are quite helpful and a great addition to any workout routine that you choose to do. A normal crunch, your knees are on the floor and with a reverse crunch you pick them up off the ground while they are bent and you keep your hands behind your head.

The idea is to get your head as close to your knees as you can get without straining. You should feel the pressure in the abdominal region. While most people have heard that crunches are a necessary part of an ab workout, doing them while on a medicine ball also helps you make your range of movement better. Medicine balls are weighted and about the size of an average soccer ball; you’ll see them at the gym and you shouldn’t confuse them with the bigger stability balls, which also have their uses. Another good exercise to do on a medicine ball is the plank, where you place your hands on the ball while holding the rest of your body in a push-up type position. If you want to make this more challenging, do leg lifts while you do this kind of exercise. If you aren’t used to doing these kinds of exercises, though, you can do them on a regular mat before moving up to the medicine ball.

There are lots of machines to help you with abdominal workouts but, if you look closely, you’ll see that most of them are just having you do an exercise that is very similar to the traditional abdominal crunch.

While sit-ups are typically called “the best ab workout” a person can do, it is also the most loathed. The real issue with sit ups is that you have to do an enormous amount of them before you get the results you really want. A far better choice today is to use the machine that makes the movement more efficient. You can use a lot of different kinds of machines that will imitate the sit up motion for you but that will give you better support and improve your range of motion which makes this particular exercise a lot more effective and a lot safer. Some of these machines have the name “ab chair” but there are different machines available as well. One of these machines can give you the same effect in just five minutes that would take a lot longer if you did the sit ups naturally.

Ab workouts can be done in many ways though the muscle groups that get targeted are all basically the same. Aside from doing ab exercises, however, make sure you also do a good amount of cardio and resistance training for your whole body. If you are patient and work out regularly the ab workouts outlined in this article can be incredibly helpful. Work hard to get benefit from every workout and eventually you will see the changes you want to see the most.
