Bunions are a painful condition and are actually a common condition of the foot. This is basically a deformity in the foot that turns the big toe inward toward the other toes. The bottom of the toe will often protrude and become very painful and swollen. Furthermore, as the inward-turning of the toe becomes more pronounced, it causes the joints to enlarge, which is why you may notice a large base along the side of the foot near the base of the big toe. If you wish to prevent this debilitating condition from happening to you, consider the following prevention tips:

The wrong shoes can actually increase a person’s risk for getting bunions. Women are afflicted with this condition more than men and it is probably due to the fact that women wear high heels and shoes that are often too narrow. Shoes that tend to crowd the feet could lead to this disfigurement.

The flexibility of the shoe is also an important factor when you are shoe shopping. For example, a low-rise leather shoe is going to bend with the foot. Shoes that tend to be more rigid will only cause your foot discomfort. Wearing shoes that fit properly and that are comfortable could reduce the risk for you.

Those who spend a large amount of their time on their feet should also take some precautions. Along with good-fitting shoes, take time to put them up to relax them. When you have the start of something that you think could be a bunion, consider buying special padding that can be placed directly on the area to reduce some of the chafing or pressure from being on your feet all the time.

As this condition can be hereditary, make sure to ask members of your family if anyone has ever experienced it. Knowing that someone else in your family has this condition will help you to take it more seriously and pay special attention to any pain you may be feeling in your feet.

Bunions may not need any treatment beyond a prescription anti-inflammatory medication, but if it gets severe, it could require surgery. By taking the above things into consideration, you can reduce your own risk for getting them.
