Parents of young children find it alarming when their young ones cough. This is particularly true when the cough is persistent and lasting up to weeks. Stressful and straining coughs also come with gagging and vomiting, and can leave the child unrested and heartless. In fact, some coughing happens at night, stealing away critical hours for sleep, resting, and recuperating.

Parents have a need to realise that coughing is in fact a good thing the body performs on its own, as natural reflex, to get rid of phlegm. Although a cough looks, feels, and sounds awful, it is actually positive to a child. A child normally does not need assistance with coughing, she can do this on her own. This is especially true for clear coughs, or coughs which have plain, and not yellowish, phlegm.

The foremost thing parents can do to assist a child in overcoming cough is fortifying the kid’s immune system against impending diseases. When a child coughs, especially at night, she loses precious time for sleep and rest, which in turn causes her immune system to fall and her vulnerability to diseases to advance. A child can be given a great deal of water, fruit juices, a healthy diet, and lots of handwashing for a week to help him combat the results of coughing.

Parents should, however, take stronger measures if a cough persists for two weeks or more. Bring the child to a doctor who can diagnose the malady which the cough is trying to manifest a symptom of. Parents should observe age-appropriate medicines and dish out to the kid for a week.

Lasting cough with itchiness, asthma, and other irritations call for a visit to a physician if, after the medicine is administered for one week, the coughing still persists.

A word of caution to parents: Never give kids an adult OTC cough medicine as these have damaging effects on the kid. Cough medicines also do not heal the cough, they simply remedy the child of the discomforts related with coughing such as runny nose, sore throat, losing breath, fever and tiredness.

See a physician for the best and safest approach to cough management.
