Headaches are an extremely common complaint thanks to the increased stress of today’s society. It is not usual, though, to suffer from a major headache each day or each week. A common cause of stress headaches is a lack of sleep. People typically need at least seven hours of sleep at night to feel rested and good. When you get fewer hours than this, you are at risk for lots of problems not the least of which is headaches.

You will want to try to go to bed earlier so maybe some schedule changes are in order. Other options include drinking fewer caffeinated beverages and turning off the TV and computer earlier. If you can fit in a nap sometime during the day, this can be another solution. Even when you can’t sleep during the middle of the day, simply lying down and closing your eyes for a couple of minutes can be good therapy. You don’t have to wait until you have a headache to do this, either -by taking some time for relaxation every day, you may be able to prevent headaches from occurring.

Stress headaches can be helped tremendously with regular exercise. This is probably really obvious but it’s hard to work up the energy to go to the gym when you’ve got a bad headache. You need to concentrate on getting more exercise in general though because that is what will help you reduce the frequency of your headaches. Aerobic exercise is really great for bettering your circulation and oxygen intake, both of which help you prevent your headaches. Don’t try to exercise while you have a headache, but start making it part of your routine, at least a few times per week and you should gradually see a real improvement.
