Just about everyone has at least one person in their life that can literally stuff his or her mouth with delicious high calorie foods like burgers and cake without gaining a single ounce. When asked about this, these people often attribute the inability to gain excess weight on their metabolism. Have you ever wondered if you increase metabolism you will decrease your weight? What is metabolism?

Metabolism is the process that the body used to turn calories into the energy that’s need for both physiological and non physiological functions.

Energy metabolism can be simply defined as the chemical process by which the calories in the food we eat are converted into energy; this in turn is used for the various physiological and other functions. Your body uses energy even when you are sleeping for core bodily functions such as breathing, repairing cellular damage, secreting hormones and circulating blood through the system.

Each person has a unique metabolic rate that is defined as the number of calories the body needs to function while at rest. This is called the base metabolic rate. The base metabolic rate is calculated by multiplying the body weight by 10. For instance, a person that weighs 125 pounds will have a base metabolic rate of 1250 calories. Any calories that are consumed above the base metabolic rate will result in weight gain no matter what kinds of foods that are eaten.

Can you really lose weight if you increase your metabolism?

The process of metabolism is completely natural. While the metabolism is fine tuned to meet the energy needs of different physiological systems, there are some factors that can have an impact on the metabolic rate including physical activity, nutrition, age, and gender.

Individuals that have a high metabolic rate burn calories faster than individuals with slower metabolism. If two people were tested, one with a high metabolism and the other with a slow metabolism, the results would show that the person with a slow metabolism will burn calories slower than the individual with a high metabolic rate.

Is it really possible to change or increase your metabolism?

The answer is yes. It is possible to increase your metabolism, which will have a direct impact on weight loss efforts. One of the factors that affect your metabolic rate is aging. As a person grows older, many will find that it’s getting harder and harder to lose weight. This can be directly attributed to a metabolic rate that’s decreasing. However, there are some simple steps that anyone can take to increase metabolism and prevent obesity. Aerobic and strength training exercise can help you increase your metabolism.

Aerobics and strength training can help build more muscle in the body which will increase your metabolism. This happens because muscles require more energy for repair and maintenance than fatty tissue does. Some specific foods and nutritional supplements are known to effectively increase metabolism while decreasing weight.

Is increasing your metabolism all you have to do to lose weight?

Although increasing your metabolism can help you to decrease weight fast and achieve your weight loss goals sooner, it would be inappropriate to rely solely on an increased metabolic rate for weight control. You cannot expect to lose weight while you gorge on fat, sugar and carbohydrate laden food items just because you have a high metabolic rate.

It’s important to remember that any calories above the needs of the base metabolic rate will be turned into fat that’s stored in the cells. If you consume more calories than your body needs, you will either have to burn these calories or add inches to your waist line. This is the reason that it’s critical to follow an exercise regimen and healthy diet when you’re trying to lose weight.

Talk to a dietitian about your daily nutritional needs and try not to consume more than the base calories required by your body. You don’t necessarily need to follow restrictive and stringent diet regimens or even resort to starving yourself; these will often adversely impact the body’s natural metabolic rate. Instead, go for a healthy diet that includes all types of nutritional groups.
