Oftentimes, that buzzing in ear can be very annoying. It can get in the way of your concentrating, sleeping or any other usual activity. The sound heard also may vary. It can range anywhere from a ringing, hissing, whistling to swooshing quality. In the medical world, it’s a condition referred to as ‘tinnitus’.

According to a report, it’s estimated that the number of people in the US with such condition amounts to 50 million. Causative factors are varied. It can be due to an ear infection of excessive earwax. It may be caused by trauma to the neck or head. Someone with hypertension may experience it. Certain drugs prescribed by a physician may also trigger the problem. Antidepressants, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs are some of them.

Seeing an ear doctor or otolaryngologist will help determine the cause of this issue. But there are times that even when the problem that contributes to its existence has been cured, the annoying sound heard may still persist. Certain things, however, may be done to make the problem easier to bear or less likely to attack.

Limit your intake of salty or fatty foods. Try to stay away from beverages with caffeine or grain-based drinks like red wine. It will also help a lot if you refrain from eating chocolates or certain cheese types.

Vitamin B12 is beneficial for the auditory nerve’s health. Foods that are rich in this vitamin include beef, fish, eggs and liver. You may also have your dose by taking supplements available at your local health food shop. You might also want to check out herbal supplements that can help with the condition. Some of them are ginkgo biloba, burdock root and goldenseal.

Protect yourself from loud noises. If your work entails the use of machinery producing loud sounds, wear earmuffs or plugs. That buzzing in ear tends to worsen when the background is quiet, such as at night. Purchase a CD which contains chants or nature sounds like flowing river or falling rain, and play it during bedtime. An electronic device called a ‘masker’ can also be beneficial for the sufferer.
