There are several causes of dry mouth at night for you to consider before you will be able to solve the problem. For example, if you snore, this will cause a lack of saliva because your mouth is open much of the night. To help with snoring, if that is your problem, you can try sleeping on your side, or try the nasal strips sold as an aid for this problem.
A couple of the other things that cause a dry mouth at night are caffeine, or alcohol. Not just coffee but any drink with caffeine in it could cause a reduced amount of saliva. This lack of saliva can lead to tooth decay, and a foul smelling mouth.
To help the production of saliva if you do have a drink before going to bed be sure to brush your teeth and use a tongue scraper to eliminate any bacteria build up. Drink a few glasses of water after this to keep your mouth wet. It would be best to try an stop having these drinks before bed though.
If you eat or drink anything with sugar in it before bed, you will have a dry mouth at night. Try going for at least an hour without any of these before you go to sleep, this should help to produce more saliva. Dentists say to try chewing a piece of sugar free gum before bed to stimulate saliva production and stop dry mouth at night.
Having a cigarette or chewing tobacco during the course of the night will also cause your saliva production to go down and give you a dry mouth at night. If you can stop these things at night you should solve your problem. If you can’t, than be sure to use a tongue scraper to clean your mouth and drink a lot of water.
Some prescription medications will cause a dry mouth at night, especially those taken for high blood pressure, pain, depression or allergies. Talk to your doctor about your medication if it cannot be changed he or she might be able to give you something that will stimulate the production of saliva.
Having a dry mouth at night or lack of saliva can lead to problems other than a foul smell. You can end up with sores, tooth decay or a sore throat. If you have tried to reduce your intake of cigarettes and food or drinks that contain sugar or caffeine, and help for snoring, and nothing works it may be time to speak to your doctor about your dry mouth at night problem.
