In today’s world of modern technology, more and more people have opted to work at home instead of in what some consider the “normal” workplace. Some have started their own internet businesses, others are working freelance as writers, data processors, authority bloggers and then there are some who still have their old jobs, and just work from home using links from their computer to the company one. More and more businesses are beginning to understand and utilise the benefits of having their employees work from home instead of coming in to an office setting.
Why is this?
Well, they are myriad. There are countless perks to working from your own home. An obvious one is that you can make your own lunch/dinner and snacks. This not only saves you money, but you are able to prepare something that is actually good for you as opposed to grabbing a fatty sandwich, or a canteen lunch. It also ensures you do have some food, as opposed to skipping a meal at work because you just don’t have the time. In fact the health related benefits of working from home are many and great.
So many people these days work jobs they don’t like, with people they’re not that bothered for. They have enormous workloads, no time to take breaks, have to travel during the busiest hours of the day and deadlines coming out of their ears. This leads to a build up of stress, that can be so chronic you don’t even realise that you are stressed. It becomes a way of life. However chronic stress is very bad for you, both psychologically and physically.
Reasons why chronic stress is so bad for you include increased blood pressure, premature ageing, tiredness, depression, bad eating habits, muscle tension, irritability and outbursts of emotions. And unless you deal with it, this stress comes home with you as well and can affect your family and home life.
So, how would working form home help with this? Well, for starters you get to spend more time with your partner or children, or just yourself. You can work to your own deadlines and schedules and you only work with people that you have chosen to work with. Your office is yours to design however you like it, there is no travelling at the busiest periods of the day, and no getting home too late or getting up too early.
Working in an office can also mean that you are more likely to pick up colds or various other illnesses as you are exposed daily to more germs from other people. Especially that particularly unhygienic worker that uses your desk when you are not there(!). If you get sick, you have to take time off or struggle on regardless. Imagine how much easier it would be, if when you are a bit poorly you could workwhile sitting comfortably on the sofa!
It is so much easier to get things done when working from home, for example house chores or family related commitments can be slotted in during your working day instead of piling things up to do at the weekend. There is more time to get some daily exercise in, not least of all because you are able to shower at home. You could also spend some time meditating which is a great way to rejuvenate your mind.
Some people will tell you that you have more job security when you work at a ‘regular’ office job. Well, how can it be secure if you can lose that job with two little words (you’re fired)? Working at home also allows you to work on many businesses if you choose to, giving you opportunities to increase your salary as many times as you want.
There are numerous other benefits to working from home which have not been covered here. However, a better diet, more exercise, less stress and extra income are all pretty good for starters! You can be in control of your time and working space, doing what you love in your own way. Sounds pretty good, huh?
