When discussing vision aids that are available today, most people immediately think of glasses or contacts. These are very popular among the visually impaired. However, there are many products available to assist those who have trouble seeing on any level.

There are many books and manuals available for those who have been visually impaired for one reason or another. Books can be purchased in large print or in Braille. Today, the invention of the handheld electronic book reader, such as the Kindle, allows people to zoom in on the words, making them larger and easier to read.

Navigators and GPS systems in vehicles have voice capabilities so that the person driving does not need to look at it to see where to go. This is a good product even for people who have no sight issues. It prevents the need to look down at a map or in any direction other than the road.

Products have been developed to help the visually impaired with all kinds of typical daily needs. Canes are often needed. Talking watches and clocks satisfy the need to know what time it is. There are magnifiers of all levels for people who have a small need and those whose needs are more severe. Some magnifiers are small enough to add to a pair of glasses while others are big enough to use as the windshield of a vehicle.

Products can be special ordered to help certain problems. When these products are ordered online, the patient can send his or her information to the company and they will develop the product in accordance with the level of need. These companies create cooking tools, telephones, alarms, reading machines and other products.

New technology has opened the opportunity for new vision aids across the board. Computers have made these products available to a wider audience. The tools that are being developed today will help the visually impaired in the areas of entertainment, education, necessity and safety.

Poor eyesight is a disability afflicting people from all walks of life, but individuals can take steps to minimize the effects. Through education on low vision management and the utilization of vision aids, those individuals suffering from vision loss may lead fairly regular lives.
