The Struggles Of Young Doctors

By Daniel Taylor

These days, the fresh crop of medical doctors toil in less working hours with the laws implemented last year, very much unlike their predecessors. But herein lie a lot of challenges. Hospitals are now ridden with expenditure problems as they give work schedules a facelift while most doctors and medical student find themselves swarmed with so much work.

Plenty of apprehensions came after the influx of concerns on doctors? excessive work hours can even put patients? wellbeing at risk. Such modifications are commenced while making sure that they put the quality of health care as topmost priority, avers the American association of medical colleges? chairman who speaks on behalf of more than 400 foremost teaching health institutions.

Such guiding principles which have been taken up by the accrediting group of medical graduate programs that also administers over more than 7,800 residency courses has reduced the doctors? working hours to a meager 80 hours each week and this becomes a tight spot for the doctors whose populace rises by the hundreds of even more. Specializing residents like those delving on surgery got to log in a hundred hours or more of work each week before this was implemented. Today?s breed of medical residents are asked to follow new policies such as needing to take a break for at least 10 hours or more in between shifts as well as being ineligible to work for over 24 consecutive hours.

The phase that new medical doctors enter into right after their graduation is known as residency, and here is where they specialize in their chosen medical areas for a span of three to seven years. One resident doctor, who used to study in one of the state universities has borne his share of working excessive hours, but now has more energy to teach interns and treat patients. A new cultural trend among today?s medical residents encourage them from working less than the usual hundred hours per week since this has been found to impinge on their overall health.

The accreditation coucil shares that many of the residency programs are able to adhere to these new standards. Since a few months back then, the council has been able to revisit and pore through a quarter of the thousands of existing programs and this gave them the idea that violations on work hours make 5 percent of the concerns. Half of the offenses or more were do to residents going against the 80 hour limit set per week.

The accreditation council also allowed 75 surgical programs to extend resident work hours to 88 hours a week. Until this day, handfuls of doctors who are residents have undertaken grievance steps on violations of work hours but eleven of these have been thwarted due to lack of facts. The group known as the American medical student association adheres to what they claim that such violations are underreported and they add about how residents do not squeals as it might jeopardize their accreditation.

It was also discovered by the association that plenty of medical school graduates who are not ready for residency yet cover more work. Premature data from a survey conducted with 500 students of medicine depicted that half of them were made to do clerical duties for the residents while the quarter were known to complete clinical tasks. It’s not a secret that shifting work hours of residents have created major stress upon the staffing aspect of the system, avers the president of the medical student association. Some residency programs have spent millions of dollars hiring nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to fill shifts. Others rearranged schedules to create a night float rotation in which a team of residents arrives in the evening to relieve the early bird workers.
