If you're fond of eating Mediterranean style cuisine, you surely know that herbs and spices play a major role in polishing up these dishes. But more than only adding great flavor to these luxurious fares, these herbs and spices also provide a large amount of healthy benefits “and that is what makes them much more valuable!

Like most plants, herbs and spices contain phytonutrients, the chemicals that help plants overcome all of the challenges the environment has in store for them. Curiously enough, these plant nutrient elements appear to protect us from harm, too. Studies show that phytonutrients exert a beneficial effect in treating and preventing diabetes, coronary disease, raised blood pressure and cancer “some of the number one reasons behind death in the Western world. These nutrients also act as potent anti-oxidants that help your body neutralise all those damaging oxidising agents which is the leading cause of early ageing and disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, lots of people can certainly be spared from the ill effects of cancer by simply eating foods rich in phytonutrients “and that includes fresh vegetables and fruit, cereals, beans and plant-based drinks such as wine and tea. To support this statement, contemporary studies prove that there's a lower prevalence of breast and endometrial cancer in girls from Asian nations as compared to women in the US. And one of the most probable reasons behind this conspicuous difference is on food we usually eat.

There's a lot of evidence pertaining to the health benefits of phytonutrients but if you need another solid evidence, you will be interested to find out about this particular UC Davis report. This report means that flavonoids, one of the most varied groups of phytonutrients, are accountable for increased longevity and low death rates among individuals who are consuming high amounts of plant-based foods.
