Conventional medication treatments for migraine are often expensive, have nasty side effects and frequently are ineffective. This may mean you will have to seek alternative remedies for your migraine – very often these are more effective in allowing you to resume your normal daily activity.

No one knows for certain what causes migraine. The best treatment for migraine is to prevent it. The aim of a preventive treatment for migraine is to prevent or reduce the frequency of new migraine attacks from occurring. Headaches manifest themselves in a variety of ways depending on a person’s stress level, physiology, diet and even immune responses.

Painkillers are the convenetional drugs and Sumatripan and Imitrex are the best known ones on the market. Some drugs act to relieve severe symptoms and these are known as abortive. Prohylactic drugs will help to prevent recurrent headaches and also reduce the number of attacks for chronic sufferers. Family doctors tend to prescribe different drugs from their neurologist colleagues.

When an attack comes on, it is useful to find a quiet dark room and apply ice to your forehead. No trials have been done as yet on these measures as they are non pharmological and nobody is interested as they are not likely to make money from this ! Migraine sufferers are always trying to find ways to prevent migraine attacks.

Avoiding certain foods has worked well for some sufferers and having identified the culprits, they will be able to reduce the number of attacks. In the workplace, you may have to explain to your boss that you will need more breaks in order to prevent an attack coming on. Prevention here will save lots of time which would be lost if you actually get an attack. Tightening muscles around the neck as you slave over a computer and poor posture will not help you to reduce the attacks.

The herb feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) has been used for centuries as a folk remedy for headache, migraine, arthritis, pain, and fever in Europe. Natural remedies for migraine treatment generally can be grouped into two distinct areas of opportunity, these being manual therapies such as hypnosis, meditation , acupuncture , shiatsu or herbal remedies using herbs with specific nutrients to treat migraine.

Up to now, the mineral magnesium has been found to be the most successful in treating headaches and migraine. This valuable mineral is found in soya beans, vegetables, seeds, nuts and fish. Some American researchers have found that a combination of magnesium taurate and fish oil will reduce spasms in the blood vessels which is the major cause of pain in migraine. Vitamin B2 and the butterbur root extract have also been shown to be effective.

You may be worried about the side effects of conventional migraine medications and you may want to consider trying a herbal remedy. If you combine this with some changes in your diet ,this may well be the solution for you.
