Looking for some fun? Whatever you do, Don't Click Here!

As the name suggests, toenail fungus is an infection of the toenails caused by fungus. It is a common ailment worldwide. Though, elderly people are more likely to suffer from toenail fungal infection, sometimes even kids may get affected by it. Toenail fungus results in thickening and de-coloration of the toenails, and the condition can be very irritating and socially embarrassing.

The answers to what causes toenail fungus in people are many. The common causes of toenail fungal infection are as under:

  • Wearing warm and moist socks or tight shoes. This makes the conditions ideal for fungus to grow more quickly. This is what causes toenail fungus in most cases.
  • A weak immune system results in recurrence of toenail fungal infection.
  • Staying in a humid environment for long periods.
  • If you have a wound on the toe near your nails, it could result in a fungal infection.
  • Excessive sweating of the feet.
  • Unhygienic lifestyle, such as not changing your socks everyday.

Toenail fungus symptoms are as listed below:

  • Thickening of the nails.
  • Nails lose their shine and look dull.
  • Nails become brittle.
  • Nails become yellow or brownish in color.
  • Depositions of debris beneath the nails.
  • In severe cases, the nails begin to get separated from the nail beds. This condition arises if the fungal infection persists for a long period.

There are a number of home remedies for toenail fungus treatment. You can use any of the following most commonly used home remedies.

  • Make a solution by taking equal quantities of warm water, vinegar, and apple cider. Soak your feet in this solution for about 15 to 20 minutes. After that, clean and dry your feet. You can also use a hair drier for drying your feet. However, take care that temperature is not very high. Doing this twice a day should help relieve the problem of fungal infection within a fortnight or so.
  • Use of certain essential oils is also very effective in treating toenail fungus as these essential oils have excellent antibacterial and fungicide properties. The most commonly used oil for such infections is tea tree essential oil, which is a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent. While going to bed apply diluted tea tree oil on the affected nails. It should help to reduce the fungi that are causing the infection.
  • Immerse your toenails in a mouthwash for about five minutes. This not only reduces the fungus but also helps in recovering the luster of your nails.

Keep in mind that these are home remedies not the only cure; if the problem persists for over two weeks, you should consult your health care provider.
