Pittsburgh Athletic Injury Safety Tips

Every year people are injured in sports. Whether it is organized or a weekend warrior situation, you can do things to protect yourself. It is not difficult to strain muscles and suffer things like low back pain. A few safety tips from your Pittsburgh chiropractor may make your sports, more enjoyable.

Slow and steady is a good pace. Maybe you have not engaged in strenuous exercise for some time. Give your body a chance to adjust. Start with easier activities and work your way up. For example, you may wish to play softball. Go out and practice beforehand. Your body may be doing things that it is not used to.

Warming up is an important part of any sports program. You may wish to jog up and down stairs for a few minutes. Perhaps you can spend five to ten minutes on a rowing machine or exercise bike. Warm muscles are less prone to injury.

It is vital to stretch muscles before you begin to work them hard. This gives them the opportunity to relax. When muscles are tight, tendons and ligaments are also tight. This makes your more prone to injury. Stretching also helps to improve muscle and joint flexibility. Remember to slowly stretch and do not bounce. When touching your toes, only reach as far as you can, without pain. Do not force it.

Keep your body hydrated. Drink plenty of water, before and during your sports. You will function at maximum efficiency when you are hydrated. Your muscles will perform better and you will not fatigue as easily. Fatigue can contribute to muscle strain. Coffee, colas, and other caffeinated drinks do not count as water. You can drink sports drinks, if you are sweating a lot.
