Correct sleeping and sitting – Good posture while sitting is key to avoiding back problems. Always sit on chairs with back support. Lift your knees a few degrees higher than your hips while sitting. The best position for sleeping is the foetal position, thus on your side with bent knees. Avoid sleeping on your back or stomach as it can cause severe back problems.
Treatments. A wider variety of short and long term treatments are available depending on the degree of pain and injury. Do not take part in any activities that can make the injury or pain worse. Back pain should not be treated with bed rest exceeding a couple of days as this will just weaken the muscles more. Staying active is very important to speed up recover, no matter how much the pain is. Normal pain medication will possibly relieve the worst pain. However it is imperative to identify the cause of the problem and not just treat the symptoms. If the pain persists after a couple of days, please visit your doctor who will do the necessary blood tests, scans or referral to a physiotherapist or chiropractor.
Preventing of lower back pain. Exercise is the best kept secret for prevention of back problems and pain. Keeping the muscles supple by regular exercise will significantly decrease risk of injury. Focus on back muscle targeting workouts. Steer clear from lifting heavy equipment, furniture or even shopping.
