Even though your ResMed CPAP machine is resistant to some abuse it is still a delicate medical instrument that must be cared for properly. It is important that every couple of days you check and clean the air intake unit. Failure to do so may cause the machine to stop providing you with air in the middle of the night.
The CPAP is built in different models and sizes; it also has different accessories that make its use more comfortable. There is no age or size limit for sleep apnea sufferers so the masks are made in many different sizes. There is one for every budget so this is not a worry either. The first thing to discuss is the machine itself.
CPAPs have different functions and accessories. You can buy one that keeps a record of the breathing pattern the patient has every night. This pattern is stored in a computer chip which the patient sends to the doctor so he can download the information into his file. That way he knows exactly how his patient is sleeping and can make any adjustments to the machine or medication.
The function that the ResMed CPAP machine has is to monitor breathing in the patient whenever he is asleep. Its memory records the breathing needs the patient has. When he or she receives less air than the amount established for them, the machine blows into his mouth and nose an amount of air equal to the one he is missing.
If the unit has a humidifier attached to it, it is necessary to take it off and clean the inside with a mild gentle soap and sponge. Wipe it clean before returning it to its place. Again make sure that there are no leaks left between the humidifier and the air producing unit. Do not forget to check the water reservoir every night before starting the machine, operation without water may damage the humidifier.
The equipment can be used with batteries or alternate current. Once every month it is important to check all connections for any tears or wear. Keep all the electric cords rolled nicely and not knotted all over the place, this may cause damage to them. When storing them, do so in their appointed slot. They are the heart of the machine and they are ignored most of the time.
Many different models and sizes are available . Some have computer programs in them and are able to send to the doctor live information on the patients breathing, others have chips which you must remove and take to the doctor for analysis. The latest equipment allows the information to be transferred by phone to any location in the world too.
The masks are all designed to be firmly strapped over the head and under the chin. The eyes are the only thing visible on a persons’ face when the mask is on. It is important to test for leaks before lying down to sleep. All you have to do is lie down and breathe. The machine will tell you if there are any leaks and it will not restart until they are fixed.
