Some Facts About Erectile Dysfunction

By John Fleming

There has been a lot of new information discovered in the last 20 years about erectile dysfunction, or ED. What was previously thought to be a rare occurrence is now being acknowledged to be a commonly occurring problem. The generally accepted wisdom in the past was that ED was rarely found in men under 40. Now we know that ED can occur in men at any age.

Erectile dysfunction is a problem that many men feel embarrassed to talk about, even with a doctor. Doctors weren’t very eager to talk about it either, not just because of the potential for embarrassment, but also because there just wasn’t many good treatments for the problem. In the last 20 years new research has meant that we have some very potent tools for dealing with the problem.

In the past, people came to believe many fallacies about ED and the myths about erectile dysfunction know no geographic or cultural boundaries. Ground rhinoceros horn and tiger penis are two folk remedies widely believed in some Asian countries to cure erectile dysfunction and have led to the near extinction of those two species. The obvious danger involved in obtaining those two items underlines how desperately people have been searching for help.

Today we know a lot more about ED. Age is the most common factor associated with ED with 40 percent of 40 year old men and approximately 70 percent of those in their 70s reporting some occurrence. For men under 40, ED is less common and the cause is more likely to have a psychological origin. Some other physical aspects that are associated with ED are diabetes, high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. There are also some operations such as prostate cancer surgery and rectal surgery that are known to increase the incidence of ED.

The good news is that there are many effective treatments available today for overcoming ED. The most common approach used today are pills such as Viagra or Cialis. These medications work by boosting the effects of one of the chemicals the body releases during sexual arousal. This allows an increase of blood flow into the penis. Drugs like Viagra are very safe and have few adverse side effects. The most common complaints are headache and stomach ache

Men with erectile dysfunction can now turn to a variety of options for relief and can be assured of an improvement in sexual satisfaction and general quality of their lives. Be sure you talk to your doctor about possible complications with other conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Your doctor can evaluate your specific needs and prescribe the course of treatment that is right for your needs.
