With tens of millions of people around the globe suffering from clinical depression, it can truly be considered an epidemic. Although definitions can vary slightly, there are universal signs that point to this chronic issue. So, what are the symptoms of depression?
The signs of depression will differ from person to person, so there is no set of rules by which to go by. There is, however, many definitive symptoms that should act as a warning sign. If you or someone you love have showcased any of the following signs, it might be time to consider getting some professional help.
One warning sign that is often a results of clinical depression is know as Anhedonia. This is the absence of happiness or joy when doing activities that made the individual happy in the past. Although feeling this way is normal from time to time, frequent episodes might indicate depression. Also, difficulty concentrating and focusing on daily life is a red flag.
Keep an eye out for interruptions in daily sleeping and eating habits. Things like anorexia and bulimia are often indicators of depression, as are night terrors and vivid nightmares. Keep these things in mind and watch for disturbances in a person’s daily routine.
There are other, much more serious signs of depression that cannot be ignored. Thoughts of suicide and episodes of hallucinations, illusions, and paranoia are troubling things that might signal a real problem. Other symptoms include a general lack of energy or motivation and feelings of worthlessness and guilt.
If you, or someone you love, suffers frequently from some or all of these issues, it might be time to contact professionals who can help. There are many treatment services and clinics that can help an individual deal with these issues. Don’t ignore depression. It can take over your life if you allow it too. Seek help immediately.
