Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its therapeutic offshoot, hypnotherapy. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don’t consider them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Some of the popular misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the truth behind them are discussed here.

Hypnosis has no connection with any sort of dark arts. It borders more on the science of psychology and is very easy to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others mostly refuse to believe in it. They believe that the subjects who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the influence of the practitioner. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another myth that has been circulating for quite some time now. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but stays completely conscious of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes entirely and is thus able to concentrate fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Another misconception, which has been propagated by some scientists, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without considering individual differences in character and disposition. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and clicks only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

Many people take hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is an interaction technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not correct. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, whereas the very crux of the hypnosis method is communication.

Another myth is that bodily and behavioural changes in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is unnatural to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating in a controlled manner, and quitting smoking and other addictions by ensuring a good amount of of inspiration in an individual.

If a person falls for all the wrong notions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself burn the bridge to a better and healthier life.
