Things To Stay Away From When Trying To Get Abs

By Mary Anderson

A frequent question is how to get abs, with people frequently frustrated when they think they are doing everything right. Avoid these common mistakes and the answers to how to get abs will become clear.

1. Doing hundreds of crunches every day

Whilst the determination and focus of anyone who does loads of crunches can be admired, this discipline could be better focused elsewhere. Crunches are useful for beginners, but for an experienced trainer they offer very little resistance to the muscles. You must supply a challenge to your muscles to truly work them correctly. Try something like hanging leg raises (with a rounded rather than arched back) for a really effective work out.

2. Neglecting a good diet

A poor diet is one of the primary reasons for bad looking abs showing. A good diet will have many benefits – firstly you will feel better, which will make your workouts more effective – and you more likely to complete them. A good diet will also promote fat loss, so that great abs will not be hidden below a layer of body fat. Many individuals train plenty and still allow poor dietary habits to stop them from getting nice looking abs. The best things to eat are those that are organic and with as little processing as possible. This will mean you are taking in foods that your body can easily use, and not clogging up and poisoning your system with a lot of artificial substances.

3. Spending hours a day doing cardio work

Research has shown that this is really not a good idea. Workouts longer than an hour can actually lead to your body burning lean muscle for the energy it needs during the work out. Losing muscle can decrease your metabolic rate and damage the thing you are trying to build. The better way to obtain a good cardio workout for how to obtain abs is to do interval training or wind sprints. This is also great for your heart since you are training it through greater heart rate ranges.

4. Focusing on abs workouts

Have you ever noticed someone with a nice set of abs – but an otherwise flabby body? The abs are part of your core musculature – any multi joint exercise performed with free weights will also work the abs. Indeed some of the best abs workouts aren’t even aimed there! If you really feel that your abs need special attention then take no more than 5-7 minutes at the end of your work out to focus on them. A good ab workout may really be completed any place. Try the Vacuum – pull your belly button in as far as you can and hold it for 10-20 seconds.

Staying away from these mistakes will carry you down the path of how to obtain abs. Not only will you get great abs but your overall health and fitness will improve along with your abdominal muscles.
