A condition that is very common to many people is nail fungus or the medical term, onychomycosis. Tiny organisms infect the fingernail or toenail and that is what causes the problem. Treatment can be complicated since the fungus grows beneath the fingernail or toenail. There are many types of toenail fungus treatments that a person can try to cure the condition.

Fungus thrives in a warm, dark and moist environment like in a shoe. Signs that a toenail has been infected with fungus are numerous. The toenail can get flaky, brittle, turn yellow, black or have a brownish color to it. It can also get very thick and be painful when you wear shoes. The toenail may even have a bad smell to it.

Toenail treatments are numerous in stores and on the internet. Trial and error is the best way to figure out what will work or not for a specific person. A better recommendation is to visit a doctor about the problem.

One course of treatment the physician may prescribe is oral or topical medications. These medications do work but it takes a while. The medications are cost a lot of money and do not get covered by health insurance programs typically.

Home remedies are numerous. Some will work and some will not work at curing the problem. Once such remedy that may assist the problem is to rub Vick’s Vapor Rub on the toenail and let it sit overnight exposed and not in a sock. Continue this procedure a few nights in a row. Another trick from a podiatrist is to apply the abrasive cleaner, Comet to the infected nail once per day for about a week. Give it a good scrub with a little nail brush. Once the fungus is dead, trim the toenail back as it grows out. It may take about a year and a half for a new toenail to grow.

Treatment for nail fungus is very numerous. Some treatments involve medications and are not typically covered by insurance companies. Usually a person is left to their own devices and researching. The internet has a lot of information. A person should try some remedies and see what works for them.
