Trail Running Training

By Roger Barclay

One of the most stimulating forms of exercise for people of all ages is the great sport of trail running. While you will enjoy a great cardio workout as a result, the main purpose is to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of the local area.

But one is well-advised to properly train prior to heading out for a session of trail running. Trail running is unlike running on a sidewalk or road due to its many ups and downs and twists and turns.

To start off in your trail running career, make sure that you consult a physician before you do any kind of intense activity such as this. It is very important that your family doctor clears you for this type of workout, as it can be extremely draining both physically and mentally.

If you are not a seasoned runner, you will have to gradually enhance your running endurance. Using the same trails which you intend to use for your trail running, begin with a routine which includes both running and walking. Eventually, you will establish your strength and endurance such that you will be able to run the complete length of the trail.

You do want to be sure that you wear good running shoes and clothing that’s suitable for the environment along the trail. It’s also important that you stay hydrated during long runs or you might run out of energy, so be sure to bring along a water bottle as well. Check your local sports stores for small running packs or belts that you can use to stow your water bottle as well as any other items you need for your run.

You will need to ready yourself for a running experience where the terrain is not flat and which will frequently be quite hilly. Specialized training is necessary for one to become skilled in traversing the up-slopes and the down-slopes which are frequently found in trail running. In the beginning, you should consider walking up the hill and then easily jogging back down so that you can get a feeling for how you will need to negotiate the trail you will be running.

Trail running is not for everyone, but it can be a very rewarding experience for anyone who is able to expertly navigate the natural terrain. Always relying on safety as the first element of any athletic activity will help you to fully enjoy all of the benefits that trail running can provide.

It is an activity that cannot only improve your physical health but your mental health as well. Make sure to always be well prepared for your trail running in order for you to experience all of the fun that trail running can provide.

Roger has been involved in mens trail running for many years and he loves it. So much so that he shares his love of it at his blog men’s trail running, so take a look.
