There are numerous theories out there about how to lose weight the fastest. While some make sense, others are downright dangerous. One of the most impractical ways to try to lose weight is to trying to lose weight with laxatives.

The way laxatives work is that they stimulate the colon, which causes an increase in the rate of peristaltic movements in the bowel’s wall, as well as raises the level of water in the bowel. Neither of these will make you lose the slightest amount of weight.

These drugs do not inhibit the absorption of nutrients from foods during digestion. The body will extract what it needs from the foods we eat and the nutrients will filter into the blood stream and then to the cells. Once this process is complete, all that remains is waste material that is useless to the body. The bowel is not large and can only hold less than five pounds of waste matter.

While laxatives may hasten the expulsion of this waste material, along with a moderate amount of water, the total weight lost in the process will not be over six or seven pounds. This process can also result in healthy problems such as abdominal cramps, dehydration and other undesirable consequences that are actually more dangerous than the consequences of having those six or seven pounds present in your system.

People who use laxatives routinely as means to attempt to lose weight often find that their bowels will no longer work properly without them. This type of dependence on a drug is harmful to the body and the self esteem of the individual.

Trying to lose weight with laxatives bad for you, and it also doesn’t really work. It does not create any significant weight loss. The weight will reappear as soon as the person begins to eat normally again. You can’t lose weight with laxatives because it isn’t possible, so your best course of action is to try to find a more practical way to shed unwanted pounds.
