How to Select Workouts for Best Weight Loss Results
The only way to get long-term stomach fat loss is through a holistic approach. Nutrition and exercise are the cornerstones of a holistic weight loss approach. This write-up attempts to give some guidelines on what a workout program should contain for someone pursuing a flat belly.
For optimum returns from exercise, you must perform two different types of exercises. One is weight training and the other is cardio exercises. Cardio exercises are further broken into high intensity cardio and low intensity cardio. Knowing which exercise gives you optimum returns for your efforts will give you an edge in your battle against abdominal fat.
You should make weight resistance training as the core exercise. You need to allocate three sessions a week. Each workout can go up to 40 minutes. When the rest period between exercises are less than 1 minute, strength training can be an extremely potent fat burning exercise. A lot of calories are expanded. Strength training also causes tiny tears in your muscles. Your body needs to tear down these damaged muscles and rebuild them. This is a very energy intensive process which can elevate your metabolism\metabolic rate for up to 1 day after your last workout.
Strength training is not only for men. It is equally effective for men and women to burn fat. It is the most efficient exercise available to burn fat and sculpt your body. The metabolic boost that you get from strength training causes fat to easily burn off your stomach.
Cardio is the other exercise group for burning fat. Cardio can be divided into high intensity cardio and low intensity cardio. High intensity cardio is the more effective exercise for trimming belly fat. It activates potent fat burning hormones that help trim abdominal fat.
Examples of low intensity cardio are walking, jogging and swimming. You may not like to hear that this type of exercises are the least effective for weight loss especially for trimming stomach fat. These exercises benefit beginners by helping them build fitness. You should set a goal to build enough fitness within 6 to 12 months so that you can attempt high intensity interval training. With this exercise, the fat burn only occurs during the workout phase. The fat burning halts when you stop exercising. You should not spend too much time on low intensity cardio unless you are unfit to do high intensity cardio.
Interval training is a very intense cardio exercise. It is surely not for the rookie who just started exercising. You should be exercising for at least one year before doing high intensity cardio. Interval training can be done for any type of cardio exercise such as running and walking. You do this workout in cycles. Each cycle is made up of a work cycle and a rest phase. During the work phase, you exert as much as you can for 30 to 90 seconds. If your chosen exercise is walking, you should move as fast as you can in the work phase. The rest phase is when you slow down to catch your breath for the next work phase. You should still be moving and should not stop completely in the rest cycle. You should repeat this for six to ten cycles depending on how fit you are.
The exercise combination described above is the most optimum for long-term fat loss and to obtain a flat stomach. Weight resistance training revs up your metabolic rate to the point where you can have passive fat burn even when you are not exercising. High intensity cardio does the same for you. This is why you must eventually move to high intensity cardio for the most effective fat burn results.
