What Happens In An Alcohol Treatment Centre?

By John Rawley

Anybody who has become physically dependant upon alcohol will find that going dry is one of the most challenging experiences of their lives. No matter how determined a person is to give up the drink they will often find that the symptoms of withdrawal are too great to bear. One important fact to remember is that you don’t have to go through the cold turkey period alone, there will always be people to help you.

A team of medical experts will work through the initial period of physical, psychological and emotional challenge. They will undergo a thorough assessment of anybody who comes under their care to ensure that the rehabilitation programme is specifically focussed on the requirements of the addict.

There are 3 main programme options for anybody who has become reliant on alcohol. The renowned Alcoholics-Anonymous team have produced a 12 step plan which has enabled thousands of people throughout the UK to turn their backs on addiction. Alternatively help is provided by trained therapists who make use of cognitive-behavioural techniques. Some people choose to seek the spiritual guidance on religious based programmes.

Those people who are able to commit to lengthy stays in an alcohol treatment centre will stand a much better chance of success than those who are not. Although a person may be confident that they have beaten their addiction after only a few weeks in a clinic, the temptation to restart drinking in the outside world will be great and hard to control.

Upon leaving a rehabilitation clinic it is extremely important that the addict continues to receive after-care attention. Help may be provided in the form of counselling, group work and AA meetings, all of which play an important role in the fight against addiction. There are a wide variety of local support groups which provide much needed assistance for people attempting to stay dry.
