What is Fibro Fog?

By Claudia Scheel

Fibromyalgia is an often incapacitating chronic pain syndrome. Symptoms are targeted primarily on widespread, prolonged pain situated in all 4 quadrants of the body and tends to keep moving around. Pain also usually comes and goes. Other key Fibromyalgia symptoms consist of sleep disorders, severe fatigue, headaches, tender points, depression, heightened anxiety and stress. There are numerous other symptoms of Fibromyalgia and symptoms have a tendency to fluctuate in extreme from individual to individual. There is no known cure for Fibromyalgia.

Fibro Fog is a term used to make reference to a major symptom associated with Fibromyalgia. Fibro Fog is centered on severe and unexplained intellectual impairment. It is essential to realize that this isn’t a psychological disorder on it’s own in definition, but rather is a specific problem directly associated with the syndrome.

Fibromyalgia cognitive impairment usually takes the form of confusion as well as a lack of ability to keep and focus on a steady thought process. Organizational thought processes that are typical and taken without any consideration by most people may become next to impossible. There is a broad failure to concentrate on specific tasks currently happening and the patient can battle to focus steady attention towards a single thought or activity. Memory is commonly also impaired with short term recall often almost impossible. Fibro Fog has a tendency to appear and disappear, regularly without explanation though it does tend to worsen with overall Fibromyalgia flare ups and pain is certainly a key influencing element. The intensity or severity of this cognitive impairment also tends to vary, not just for each individual but from person to person.

Many Fibromyalgia symptoms typically function in a process described as negative feedback loops. The primary pain associated with Fibromyalgia can cause persistent sleep issues that cause fatigue which contributes to amplified stress and anxiety. The mix of fatigue, stress and anxiety work as a key catalyst for Fibro Fog. All of these related indicators impact depression and together they function as negative factors that will escalate the pain. These symptom interactions are incredibly challenging and differ from patient to patient. It is also hypothesized that Fibromyalgia pain and the disordered pain signaling operation inside the brain which has been demonstrated with Fibromyalgia function together to confuse normal brain activity linked to cognitive functions.

There are productive treatment solutions for Fibro Fog. Enhancing sleep is a primary treatment as it helps to reduce a primary causal factor. Sleep is often improved via testing several sleep hygiene choices to see which is most effective, using medicines such as Lunesta or by means of vitamin supplements like Melatonin.

There are also research verified nutritional supplements that can be helpful in improving mental function this includes Ginko Biloba, 5-HTP, D-Ribose, SAMe and B Vitamins.

Numerous exercise options that include a mental focus component have also been shown to be helpful in managing Fibro Fog such as Tai-Chi, QiGong and Yoga. Cognitive impairment can be improved with mental exercises such as puzzles or games and by means of cognitive training exercises.
