When you are involved in high impact sports such as running, football, soccer, track and field, rugby or field hockey you run a higher risk of getting injured or getting shin splints. If you maintain a proper diet, this can keep the injuries at bay. This will provide your bones with better stability all the way around and you need such stability to play sports.

Shin splints can be mild to severe and are defined as being an inflammation or pain located on the inner part of your lower leg (tibia or shin bone) that occurs when the tissue that joins your muscles to the tibia becomes inflamed and irritated. When you use certain parts of your body more than others, you can do a lot of damage; some of these injuries are caused by being in extreme sports.

If you are performing certain activities, you will have to do additional warm up exercises so that you do not get hurt. Make sure that you are wearing appropriate shoes on your feet that are the ones that go with the activity that you are doing or you could risk injury. If you’re planning to change any of the normal exercises that you do, be sure that you add more warming up first so you don’t pull anything.

Repetition of certain muscles or muscles going against one another can cause a problem as well. You need to make sure that the muscles in your lower legs or hamstrings and the upper muscles called the quadriceps are working well. Some sports areas have hard surfaces for playing and you need to be extra careful on these; some of these sports include: basketball, running or tennis

If you think that you have suffered a shin splint, you should look for some of the obvious signs: pain located directly in the shin itself, throbbing, swelling to the outside area and redness. These are just some of the things that would be a giveaway. Everyone is different, so it depends; things such as age, sex and health have a big influence on this.

You need to allow healing time for any injury or it can keep coming back; some of these injuries can get so bad that you will never be the same again. When that happens, you will find yourself showing favoritism to the other side and that can become weaker in time from doing so. If it is severe you may have to get treatment for shin splints. Shin splints are very painful and the longer that you are injured and spend time on the injured leg you can become unsteady on your feet.
