Why It Is Important To Install Residential Oxygen Deficiency Monitors And Gas Leak Detectors

By Romeo Dunstan

Keeping the air sufficient and clean is a prerequisite to the healthy living of humans. However, despite having being gifted with its ubiquitous nature, there are certain scenarios where we could find ourselves having a “bad air day”. Indeed there are certain events where we can find ourselves in where the breathable air becomes not too breathable either because of a drop in oxygen concentration or because dangerous toxic gases increase in levels which are sure to be detrimental to both human life and property.

Even though these hazards are, most often than not, associated with occupation risks that personnel encounter in their line of work in some industries, they are also something that should concern living in residential areas. It is therefore important for home dwellers to take such dangers associated with risk factors that I will expound on in the following paragraphs.

Oxygen deficiency can occur whenever the concentration level of this life giving gas in the air around you goes below 20%. The normal concentration at normal atmospheric pressure (sea level) is about 20.9%. A slight reduction of 1 to 1.5 percent may already considered a health hazard. Unconsciousness and death may occur below 10%.

Oxygen deficiency usually results from situations where there are other gases interfering with the normal air composition such as the rise of nitrogen in the air. Nitrogen is known to rapidly expand a displace oxygen and other gases from the immediate vicinity. And this can happen in instances where there are liquid nitrogen leakages or spillage in confined spaces.

The case of toxic or flammable gas is usually attributed to leaks from pipes supplying natural gas, propane and methane to your home. It can also be caused by the carbon monoxide coming out of exhaust from internal combustion engines in vehicles and generators. Usually, this becomes more of a risk factor in homes with garages that do not have adequate ventilation.

The best solution to the risk of oxygen deficiency and increase in toxic gases in your home is to increase emphasis on sound safety practices. Installing safety devices such as oxygen deficiency monitors and gas leak detectors is perhaps one of the simplest measures you can take to secure your home.

Rooms in your homes that have higher risks of oxygen depletion and gas spills must have these monitoring devices installed. These areas are usually the kitchen, the basement and the garage but are not limited to them. If you are unsure about how to deal with this issue, it is best to consult a safety consultant or even your insurance company (as they should have contacts in the safety industry).

The crux of the matter is that if your residence is a subscriber to gas companies or have a power generator installed somewhere in your home, you need to have provisions for gas and fire safety protocols along with gas detectors to protect you from the associated risks. Sure they will cost you some cash but they should pay you back dividends in safety and peace of mind.
